24,041 Americans Affected As Billion-Dollar Bank Suffers Data Breach

A billion-dollar bank says sensitive data belonging to thousands of customers is at risk of exposure following a major data breach.

In a new filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General, the Massachusetts-based lender Reading Cooperative Bank (RCB) says a phishing-related cyberattack is impacting 24,041 customers.

The incident is believed to have occurred between August 8th of 2024 and January 31st of 2025.

“Through RCB’s ongoing investigation, RCB determined that a bank employee clicked on a phishing email originating from a known sender at another organization with whom the bank conducts business and which routinely works in the banking industry…

RCB’s investigation determined that certain individuals’ personally identifiable information may have been impacted.”

Some of the data at risk as a result of the data breach includes names or other personally-identifying information, according to the filing.

“Since the security incident, we have implemented additional cybersecurity safeguards, and we are working closely with our internal and external experts to further enhance the security of our systems.”

Reading Cooperative Bank says customers who are especially concerned about the breach can consider placing a security freeze and a fraud alert on their credit file.

As of January 2nd, Reading Cooperative Bank had $1.2 billion in total assets.
