478,188 Americans Warned After Hackers Strike Government-Related Firm Handling Sensitive Personal Data

Hackers have breached the systems of a government-related entity handling sensitive personal information, putting the data of 478,188 Americans at risk.

According to a new notification filed with the Maine Attorney General’s office, the incident at Brittany N. Griffiths in Illinois happened in May of last year.

After a week of investigating, the firm determined that an external system intrusion – widely characterized as a hacking incident – compromised a large dataset that may include full names, contact details and other personal identifiers for nearly half a million individuals across the US.

Among those affected are more than 284,000 residents in Maine, a proportion that triggered state reporting obligations under data breach notification laws.

Once notified of the breach, the firm and state regulators began mailing formal breach notices to affected consumers, as required under Maine law. These notices typically advise recipients to take proactive steps such as placing fraud alerts with the major credit bureaus, freezing credit files, enrolling in any credit monitoring or identity protection services offered, and closely scrutinizing financial and healthcare accounts for signs of unauthorized activity.

Attorneys are already publicizing the availability of legal options for individuals whose data was compromised, highlighting potential compensation for costs associated with identity protection measures, credit monitoring and other expenses incurred in the breach’s aftermath.
