Bank Refuses To Reimburse Customer After Fraudsters Allegedly Skim Debit Card At Walgreens, Launch Spending Spree: Report

A Colorado woman says she was sent to the hospital after fighting with her bank for nearly a year to get her money refunded from a scam.

Bev Thompson of Adams County, Colorado, says she contacted GO2Bank right away when she noticed that $420 was withdrawn from her account via ATM machines at a local Walgreens – but the bank denied her fraud claim, 9News reports.

“They just keep saying ‘no, no, no.’

“All this stuff was so stressful. I ended up in the hospital for 10 days. They had to put me on anti-anxiety pills… and I’m still anxious about it.”

During the week that Thompson’s card was used, police said they responded to a report from a Walgreens clerk that two unidentified men tampered with an ATM. Body camera video obtained by 9News’ Steve on Your Side showed police officers holding a gadget – likely a shimming device – hanging from an ATM machine after the two men ran away.

Card shimming is when a device is placed inside a card reader slot to record the card’s information allowing thieves to capture its data without detection. It’s similar to card skimming except it targets the card’s microchip rather than the magnetic strip.

After investigating, 9News contacted GO2Bank with its findings, forcing the bank to give Thompson a full refund.

Says Alison Lubert, spokesperson for GO2Bank parent company Greendot,

“As a general rule, for privacy and security reasons, we do not share specific information regarding customer accounts or circumstances, however I can confirm that account protection and fraud prevention are top priorities for us, and we work around the clock and invest heavily to identify, block and address fraudulent activity.”
